The narrator on the ark[src]

The Ark of the Covenant is a sacred chest housed in the Holy of Holies in the Hebrew tabernacle at Shiloh. It is the compartment in which the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, Aaron's budded staff, and the golden vase of manna are permanently stored. It was fashioned from acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold. Far from being a mere piece of furniture, the ark is a symbol of God's very presence among the Jewish people and his protection over them.

No one is permitted to touch the ark on penalty of death, which is why the chest is always transported using two long carrying poles that double as fighting staffs in times of war.

In volume six of the Son of Samson comic, Branan, disguised as a Philistine sentry, overhears Pathrus and Sidon's plans to raid the holy city of Shiloh for the ark of the covenant. With the help of his lion friend, Branan manages to escape the Philistine army camp and ride to Shiloh to warn the tabernacle priests of the upcoming siege. Unfortunately, Branan discovers that no warriors are left in Shiloh to defend the ark, as they are all in the town of Shechem protecting that settlement from Philstine invasion.

Head priest Zedekias permits Branan to enter the tabernacle to return the bronze serpent staff he rescued from the Witch of Endor to the Holy Place. After Branan does so, he kneels before the golden altar and petitions the Lord for help for the upcoming battle against the Philistines. When he opens his eyes, the archangels Uriel and Raphael are standing before him, offering their services in the war against Pathrus's men.

Before they leave the tent, the archangels remove one of the ark's carrying poles from the Most Holy Place and offer it to Branan as a fighting staff. They then return to the courtyard to help Branan train with his new weapon. Together, the three men of Shiloh manage to defeat Pathrus's entire army of around 3,400 soldiers, thus saving Shiloh and protecting the sacred ark of the covenant from falling into the hands of the gentiles.
